Edward Haertel (Ph.D., 1980, University of Chicago) is Jacks Family Professor of Education, Emeritus, at Stanford University, where he served on the faculty from 1980 to 2012.

Haertel is an expert in educational testing, especially test-based accountability and other policy uses of achievement tests. His early work investigated the use of latent class models for item response data. He has also studied the statistical properties of testing systems, the logic and implementation of standard setting methods and standards-based score interpretations, metric-free measures of score gaps and trends, and value-added models for teacher evaluation. He has been closely involved in the creation and maintenance of California's school accountability system, and has served on advisory committees for other states and for testing companies.

Over the course of his career, Haertel has served as president of the National Council on Measurement in Education (NCME), as a member of the National Assessment Governing Board, and as chair of the National Research Council’s Board on Testing and Assessment. He is a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and of the American Psychological Association (APA), and an elected member of the National Academy of Education. He has received career awards from NCME, from Division D of AERA, from Division 15 of APA, and from the California Educational Research Association.
